One night, while camping in the Kalahari Gemsbok Park in South Africa, we walked out into the dark to film the amazing full moon rising. Cristina and I sat down by the fence away from the other campers so we could hear the nightlife. There was a pride of lions nearby and we knew they could walk in front of us at any moment. We waited for them to make an appearance. With my 500mm lens mounted on a tripod, the moon moved slowly through the frame as clouds passed overhead. Suddenly an unexpected sound came from out of the darkness nearby. A lone jackal began singing and yapping, followed by a large male lion in full roar. The two sang an amazing duet as the moon rose into the sky. To get the full effect, play this video through speakers with good base or earphones and you will get some idea how the roar of a lion can vibrate in the center of your chest. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
